Rough Animatic

One of the first things that our group did was create an animatic of how the film would go. The story follows a marshmallow named "Marsh" as he goes to break out of his comfort zone and take a dive from a great height.

This test was created using a basic environment and only primitives for the assets. It was also a test of our sound FX and music bed.

Marsh's Rig

After the animatic was created, one of my tasks was to do rigging. Though I had never done any rigging before, I was anxious to try it out. After one of my teammates successfully modeled the character, I used the plug-in "Advanced Skeleton" to create a system of joints for our character, "Marsh".

Here is a 3/4 view of Marsh.

Here is a front view of Marsh's rig.

Marsh Demo Reel

Once the character was rigged, I created a demo of him going through different facial expressions and a squash & stretch.

Creating the Clouds

After rigging the character, I was instructed to make the clouds for the sky scenes. I initially tried doing it with Maya's BiFrost Aero, but the results were not what our team was looking for.

This led me to download Houdini FX, thanks to my instructor's advice. Another partner modeled the cloud geos and I brought the .obj files into Houdini.

Animation Scenes

Vertigo

One scene I was responsible for was called "Vertigo". It involved looking down into a field of clouds from a high vantage point. I achieved the effect of vertigo by doing the cinematic trick of moving the camera back and increasing the Field of View.

The Realization

Another scene I was responsible for was called "The Realization". It was only 26 frames long, but it required Marsh to smoothly make his way from one end of the platform to the other.

No, I Got This!

The last scene I worked on was called "No, I Got This", but we just abbreviated it into "Got This". This is the scene where Marsh turns his cowardice into courage in order to make the jump. Arguably the most important scene in the film (at least I think so)!

Marshmallow Jump - Final Cut

After a semester's worth of work, here is our group's final version of the short film "Marshmallow Jump"!
